Prince Harry married biracial American actress Meghan Markle on Saturday… but at least one liberal activist is using the joyous occasion to attack “white male supremacy.”
According to Rev. Al Sharpton, the royal wedding proves that white supremacy “is on its last breath.”
“‘When you got little white girls in Wales saying. ‘I want to be like Meghan,’ there’s a shift worldwide that white male supremacy is on its last breath,” said Sharpton.
“When you have little white girls in Arkansas look up and say, ‘I want to be beautiful and smart like Michelle Obama. I want to dress like the Obama girls,’” he added.
He continued: “That’s where that white supremacy is questioned. White parents in their living room say, ‘We’ve got to do something.’ That’s what Trump played on: ‘We’re losing control of our children.’”
Sharpton didn’t explain how a wedding broke down “male supremacy,” and didn’t comment on the fact that—because Prince Harry is now sixth in line to the British throne behind his brother, nieces, and nephews—their quarter-black children are unlikely to ever sit on the British throne.
Markle and Prince Harry were married on Saturday at Westminster Abbey. Markle, born to a black mother and white father, is the first person of partial African descent to marry into the British royal family since 1761 when Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married King George III.
The royal wedding included a number of elements from Markle’s background—including a black American bishop from Chicago who gave a sermon, and a gospel choir that sang “Stand by Me” and “This Little Light of Mine.”
However, in the past, Markle has publicly hit back against people who try to make her ethnicity an issue on either side—calling it “disheartening,” and urging people to see her for who she is, rather than where she comes from.
