Trump To Kill Guest Worker Visas?

Guest-Worker

Donald Trump, whose campaign first gained traction after a number of barbed comments he made about immigration, has come up with a new way to protect American jobs and American workers.

Trump’s new immigration plan would heavily restrict (if not outright ban) use of the H-1B visa.

That visa allows foreign guest workers–workers who intend to be here temporarily–to hold American jobs without making a strong commitment to a future in this country.

The H-1B visas are given by the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services to a skilled number of foreigners, who agree to work in specialty jobs.

Each year, the number of new immigrants who can receive an H-1B visa is capped 85,000, according to U.S. Customs and Immigration Services.

But the H-1B visa controversy results largely from the fact that they take existing jobs from native workers–especially in well-paying fields like science, technology, and engineering–and send them to newly-arrived immigrants.

Trump’s plan would make it substantially harder to hire foreign workers. That would, necessarily, make it easier to hire American workers–who are already allowed to work in this country, visa or no visa.

While Trump’s comments and stances have been controversial in the past, his first concrete immigration platform really hasn’t been. Even CNBC admitted Trump is “sort of right” when it comes to addressing the abuses that major corporations have wrought on the immigration system.
