A professor at a Catholic college – yes, a Catholic college – in Massachusetts is claiming that Jesus was, in fact, a gay, cross-dressing woman.
Tat-siong Benny Liew, a professor of New Testament Studies at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., claims that Jesus Christ was, in fact, a “drag king” and the lover of a Roman soldier.
Liew claims that there’s “something quintessentially queer” about Jesus’s relationship with God the Father.
He cites several examples from the gospels, sexualizing Jesus’s washing of the disciplines feet, claiming it was a “literary striptease.” Liew also claimed that the depiction of Jesus taking off his outer garment and wrapping a towel around his waist was “suggestive, even seductive.”
Liew also claimed that water imagery—things like piercing Jesus’s side by a lance after he died on the cross—also speaks “to Jesus’ gender indeterminacy and hence his cross-dressing and other queer desires.”
Liew has been at Holy Cross since 2013, and currently teaches the school’s introductory course on the New Testament.
