Little House on the Prairie was no match for political correctness.
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, decided over the weekend to take Laura Ingalls Wilder’s name off a major award honoring children’s books.
The reason? “Little House on the Prairie” is, apparently, too racist for its accurate depiction of settlers in the 1800s.
The ALSC claimed that Wilder’s “legacy is complex” and “not universally embraced.”
As such, they decided that the famous children’s books violate their “core values of inclusiveness, integrity and respect,” and thus decided to change the name.
“Her works reflect dated cultural attitudes toward Indigenous people and people of color that contradict modern acceptance, celebration, and understanding of diverse communities,” the ALSC said in a statement.
The 64-year-old Laura Ingall Wilder Medal—whose first recipient was Wilder herself in 1954, will now be known as the Children’s Literature Legacy Award.
