Self-declared socialist, Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), announced she’s taking a week off… without actually having worked a day at the job her constituents elected her to do.
“I’m taking a few days to take care of myself before what is sure to be an eventful term,” Ocasio-Cortez announced, via Twitter.
“For working people, immigrants, & the poor, self-care is political – not because we want it to be, but bc of the inevitable shaming of someone doing a face mask while financially stressed,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez, who will be paid $174,000 as a member of Congress but won’t officially start work until January 3, walked into a buzzsaw of brutal Twitter responses.

One commenter, named Matt Wilson, summed it up perfectly: “Your comment to ‘working people, immigrants, & the poor’ is some of the most condescending drivel I’ve seen. It’s like you’re trying to justify having a spa day to poor people.”
Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s self-declared “vacation” from not working, she continued to tweet–complaining about an ethics violation, complaining about being unable to afford rent, and complaining about an unflattering article written about her in reliably-liberal Politico.
