Ted Cruz, Republican Senator from the Lone Star state, is starting his day off with some bad news; the Democrats are messing with Texas.
Quinnipiac University just release a new poll that shows Ted Cruz is up just six points against his democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke, a US Rep from El Paso.
The poll shows Cruz with 49% of the vote and O’Rourke with 43%.
Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll had this to say about the results.
“O’Rourke makes a good impression on voters, but only about half the Texas electorate has formed an opinion of him. Sen. Cruz has a good favorability overall and is the much better known of the two men.”
Cruz was the only GOP competition that Trump really had in the 2016 presidential election and is well known around Texas and the nation. Ted even battled late night host Jimmie Kimmel one-on-one in basketball for charity. A move that got him some national TV time recently.
Despite Cruz’s growing celebrity status, a virtual unknown from Texas has a shot at beating the incumbent senator.
Earlier this week, a Texas Lyceum poll had Cruz up just two points over O’Rourke. The 41% to 39% results are within the margin of error and should deeply worry the Cruz camp.
Democrats have been drooling over the possibility of taking GOP seats from the red state of Texas, but they have not come close recently. That all could change in three months if O’Rourke finds a way to gain on Cruz and win.
A democrat winning in Texas would be a giant blow to the republican stronghold and would hurt any chances Cruz might have to run for president again.
This is one race that is far from finished and will gather national attention as we move closer to November and the midterms.
