In 2013 Sa’fyre Terry was caught in a house fire that claimed the lives of her family. She only survived because her father sacrificed himself to protect her. The young girl lost her right arm and left leg in the fire because of burns to over 80% of her body.
Living with her Aunt, she got a Christmas card tree at a local thrift store and all she wanted for Christmas was filling it up with cards. Needing help fulfilling her wish, Liz Dolder placed her niece’s request online.
What happened next is truly amazing.
The message went almost instantly viral and the next thing the family knew, cards were pouring in from all over the world and they are not stopping.
The amount of cards that are coming in are record breaking. Sa’fyre has received more cards in a single day than anyone else in Schenectady, New York.
The post office had to use two large trucks and rent a third truck, just to drop off all the cards.
The response hasn’t overwhelmed the small post office. They are thrilled for their local hero! “It’s really wonderful, the outpouring of love for this family and this little girl, said John Reilly, the Post Master for Schenectady, NY.
So far Sa’fyre has received more that 350,000 letters and they are still coming in.
In a world where social media is used to spread so many messages of hate, it is wonderful to see how a single Facebook post and a caring world can brighten one special young girl. Truly a Christmas miracle.
