A Florida man has been charged with second degree murder in the killing of his wife. He will be sentenced in January, but faces 25 years to life in prison.
He failed to prove to the jury that he shot his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, eight times as an act of self defense. Derek Medina is a 33 year old, 6 foot tall, 200 pound, amateur boxer. Considering that his wife was just 5’6” and that police stated that her body was found in a position indicating that she was, “cowering in fear”, the defense did not really stack in Medina’s favor.
Where the headline takes an unexpected turn from “Man Kills Wife Because She Threatened to Leave” begins when that same man posts a picture of his dead wife to Facebook.
The undefeated boxer alleged that he posted the photo in an attempt to show what “happened”.
Medina claims that Alfonso pulled out a knife and attacked him. He also alleges that he disarmed her and she came at him again. The medical examiner testified that all eight shots were fired downward, which makes a compelling case for Alfonso being on her knees, begging for her life, instead of a woman who was violently pursuing a victim.
His defense argued that his wife also abused drugs, battered her boxer husband, and even that she participated in Satanic worship.
Alfonso’s ten year old daughter was in the home for the murder. She was upstairs and did not witness the murder.
While Medina plead not guilty to first-degree murder, he said in his Facebook post that he would end up in prison. In fact, he included the following with the photo:
“I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. Love you guys. Miss you guys. Take care. Facebook people you’ll see me in the news,”
Well, Medina, you weren’t wrong.
