After almost 2000 years of religious teachings, the influential Catholic Church is on the verge of losing all of the credibility and respect the church has built up over almost two millennia.
The Church is in crisis and it comes down to an incredible amount of sexual abuse and predator priests who have gone unchecked for too many years. In recent months the claims have increased and yet the Vatican and the Pope have been largely silent on the issue.
In an attempt to correct the mistakes of the past and find ways to move forward, church leaders are organizing a summit on sex abuse prevention that is meeting at the Vatican in late February.
The organizers of the event said in a letter sent to church leaders that said, “acknowledging the truth of what happened” is the first step.
Pope Francis has not spoken directly to the claims against the church and the crimes his priests have committed. He has blamed the Devil in dividing his church, not the sinners who are sexually assaulting children.
The Pope has also attacked gay priests and said gay people should not enter the clergy.
The church has a real chance to make some changes and earn the religious credibility back that the church has kept for nearly 2000 years. The summit is going to be focused on responsibility, accountability and transparency according to one report.
The Catholic Church is meeting to try and save itself, with an attempt to stop these abuses from ever happening again.
Do you think the Catholic Church will be able to end sexual abuse inside its walls?
