Democrats may have lost key elections in Florida for Governor and Senator—but that doesn’t mean they’re out of trouble.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Office of Statewide Prosecution has opened a criminal investigation into whether the state engaged in possible election fraud.
Top Democrats in Florida have been accused of attempting to “fix” ballots after the state’s deadline in at least four counties.
Under Florida law, mailed-in ballots must arrive the day before the election. Ballots distributed by the party showed a “mistake” in printing that said the ballot could be returned up to two days after the election.
Democrats then successfully sued to extend the deadline after the election, allowing them to add to the vote totals in razor-close elections with ballots that weren’t legally submitted.
The Florida Democratic Party is apparently digging in for a fight: it’s hired its own independent investigator to look into the vote tampering and plans to publicly release any findings.
