Looks like President Trump might just get his “big, beautiful wall” after all.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) plans to introduce a bill that will fully fund President Donald Trump’s planned wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“We intend on having a full-fledged discussion on how to complete our mission to secure the border,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), who is retiring in January. “Yes, we will have a fight about this.”
McCarthy’s bill will include $23.4 billion in additional funding to complete the wall, which was one of Trump’s most prominent campaign promises. It could also give the Republicans another huge victory before they face voters in November–setting up 2018 to be a referendum on immigration enforcement, rather than Trump’s overall job performance.
The bill will also include a piece of legislation called Kate’s Law, an enforcement bill named for Kate Steinle, the woman who was shot on a crowded pier by an illegal immigrant in San Francisco–a sanctuary city.
McCarthy’s bill will also include the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, which will crack down on sanctuary cities.
“For decades, America’s inability to secure our borders and stop illegal immigration has encouraged millions to undertake a dangerous journey to come here in violation of our laws and created a huge loophole to the legal channels to the immigration process where America welcomes immigrants to our country,” McCarthy said in a statement. “President Trump’s election was a wakeup call to Washington. The American people want us to build the wall and enforce the law. Maintaining strong borders is one of the basic responsibilities of any nation. For too long, America has failed in this responsibility.”
